Epson C80 woes.

This is my second Epson printer (had a stylus 640 before). It might
be my last unless someone out there can help me fix it.

After replacing the yellow ink cartridge, the printer was going
through its motions when it made that horrendous sound - like the
print head had reached the end of it's travel but the motor kept going
and the drive gear spun in the belt.

Now, it won't print. When you send it something, it starts out normal
(paper is advanced) but the print head jerks on the left side and
that's when things stop. The ink light is on solid, the paper light
is on flashing, and the power light is also flashing.

I've checked for paper jams but can't find any evidence. And, paper
does seem to be flowing through unobstructed.

I've also tried powering down (even uplugging the unit) to no avail.
The printer will look normal (solid on power light and print head on
the right) but craps out the first time you try to print.

Anyone have any experience they can share that might help me resolve
this problem?

The silver guide bar needs to be wiped down with some type of lubricating
oil. I use a silicone oil on a rag and wipe down the bar. I run the
printer several times and do it again.

I'm in agreement with Safetymom. This appears to be a common and known
problem with Epsons since the 740 that hasn't been remedied very much by
Epson. Once a little 3 in 1 oli or tefllon lubrican t are applied the
problem will disappear for another year. Avoid getting lubricant on the
rubber belt that pulls the head along the guide bar. Don't be generous with
the lubricant.

First, thanks to all who responded to my post.

Lubricating the silver guide bar worked but only temporarily. After 3
prints it was back to the same-old problem. I tried repeating the
procedure but never could get it to print reliably.

Maybe I need a better lubricant? I tried a little white lithium grease
and also WD-40. The printer also seems to be sensitive to the setting
of the normal/envelope lever working more reliably on the envelope
setting.

Any specific suggestions on what lubricant to use and where I might
find it? I know silicone, teflon, and 3-in-1 were mentioned in the
posts.

Hi,1st off...any grease is too thick and WD will gum-up after a while.
I would also not use a silicone base lube.
My choice is 'Tri-Flow' (teflon and oil). Clean-up all traces of
lithum grease and apply a couple drops at each side of the transport
bearings.
