Epson C61: amazing ink usage rates

O

Old Nick

Are there any printers out there, by Epson or others, that are _not_
an ink ripoff these days?

I have an Epson C61 printer. Works well, prints reasonably good
prints. Gave me no hassles installing and has never behaved strangely.

I bought an Epson because I was sick of the uppity behaviour of HP
printers, including the new one my Dad bought, which I helped him
install. Every HP I have owned has had funny paper feeding trouble,
blocked cartridges, driver trouble etc, either together or separately.

However, this printer uses ink like it's going out of stylus! I think
it's because it cleans the cartridges all the time. I think I probably
use more ink cleaning than I do printing. You cannot refill the
cartridges AFAIK. If you run out of either ink you can't
print......._or_ clean the other cartridge, or anything.

I use 3rd party cartridges, but still it's rapidly costing me more in
ink than the printer cost. I am running at over AUD $0.10 per page of
print! Accounting for a blocked colour cartridge, it's even higher. I
turned off colour, using the "print only in B&W" setting.
Unfortunately this allowed the colour cartridge to block, as I leave
the printer on all the time, and I assume it was therefore not being
cleaned.

Of course if you clean it, you use ink.

Any advice appreciated. If this is the norm, then maybe it's time
something was done to stop this ripoff. Digital cameras are all very
well, but if my prints were to cost me anything _like_ what I fear,
then there is no point.

I know what you mean i have only just bought a brand new epson stylus
C64 printer three weeks ago as my previous epson stylus 800 had print
head issues. The new C64 uses separate chipped ink cartridges and im
amazed at the speed in which the inks seem to be going down, and i
can't say im happy about it.

I have heard from a few people that if you do a text print out every
7/14 days using the 4 main colours at the highest print quality that
will stop print heads clogging up, and don't keep the printer turned
on, only switch it on when you need to use it.

I will be buying black compatibles for this printer when they become
available, but will stick to the epson color originals because the
price is not as expensive as epson black original carts for this
printer.

Your first set of cartridges will go faster because it has to prime the
system. You should see better ink usage with the second set.

Keep the printer turned off when not in use and it will shorten the head
cleaning cycle

Obviously everybodies MMV. Why would I by a HP if

"I was sick of the uppity behaviour of HP

But thanks anyway.

If you are still on your first set of cartridges, you cant judge ink use
by them.

In order for the printer to get up and running, it has to prime itself,
which consumes more ink, right up front, than any "cleaning cycle", or
other function built into the printer.

This cycle purges ALL the air out of the print system, and fills the
printhead with ink.

Further cartridge sets will last MUCH longer as this initial purge/fill
should only happen ONCE in the printers lifetime.

Yeah? Haha. That's what they told me in the book.

Sorry for that. I am on my third black cartridge and it's dropping
like a stone.

I really, really hope that the 3rd party "cheaper" carts are not just
a rip-off, with less ink....

hmmmm....I got yhe impression that it cleaned every time you turned it

I can the printout stopping blocking, although all this cleaning
should do the job IMO.

Still not happy about this keeping turned off biso. The machine seems
to clean when I switch off and on, and this would make it _worse_.

IME, the colour carts are expensive and I can still save by getting
3rd party stuff.

Anyway all of this is moot. The whole system sucks, and seems to be a
ripoff.

Yes it runs a cleaning cycle when you turn it on. But the longer you keep
it on without printing the longer the cleaning cycle will be before it goes
to print for the first time. Also by keeping it on all the time you leave
the heads exposed to air. When you turn it off using the power button on
the printer it runs a little extra cycle to cap the heads. I have had quite
a few Epsons and never had problems because I do this. Also using 3rd party
inks can cause your printer to clog.
