Epson 960 waste ink

How do I reset the ink counter on my Epson 960 printer?

I have the Ink error light on all the time and the paper error light
is on all the time.

The ink head cartridge is all the way to the left. When I turn on the
printer it will move an inch to the right then hit the lweft side of
the printer.

I know there is a procedure to reset the printer. if anyone could
help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

If these two lights are on solid and not blinking your printer has a fatal
error, this is not an ink counter overflow.
There are several possible causes but usually the problem costs more to fix
than the printer costs to replace.
However there is one thing that is worth checking, there is a strip of plastic
that runs across the printer through the carriage, make sure it is clean and
does not have any ink or other contaminents on it. You need to check the whole
length of the strip and it can be cleaned "very carefully" with isopropyl
alcohol.
I may be able to help further if this does not fix the problem.
Feel free to e-mail me at the above address.

I don't have the proper manual for the 960, unfortunately, but another
cause of a fatal error: If the lubrication that helps the head carriage
to move across the printer (either via a metal bar guide or on some
metal edge of the printer body, this can lead to a fatal error, as the
printer loses location of the head unit.

Thanks Art, you are quite right. If the carriage is sticking on the bar, even
just slightly some printers will post a fatal error.

Here's part of service manual.
