Envelope please?

I have a user who is running Outlook 2002 and noticed that
she is getting the sytray envelope to appear periodically
when no new mail has come in. What circumstances cause
the envelope to appear? She did have an unopened message
from 2 days ago, would this cause that to happen?

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
