Envelope icon in taskbar

I want outlook 2003 to show an envelope icon in the taskbar when there
is new mail available. I'm sure this used to happen but doesn't seem
to happen any more.

I went to 'advanced email options' and checked 'Show envelope icon in
the notification area' which I assumed was to make this happen but it
has had no effect.

Anybody able to help me here?

Windows XP? Is the icon hidden in the tray? Right click on the start button
and choose properties. In the task tab, remove the check from the hide
inactive icons option - if this fixes it, choose customize from the same
dialog and set the envelope to always show.
