About 2 months ago, my system really slowed down and began hanging. I'm sure
I probably picked something up off of the Internet. I tired to use Spybout
and adware, and then defrag. But it is still hanging. Should I hang it up
and buy a new PC? My is about 2 years old.

Try using the Kaspersky or Nod32 antivirus programs. Or try a free online
virus scanner.

If this does not help, try doing a ctrl+alt+del and see which programs are
using most processor resources when the slow-down happens. Perhaps you've
through installing a certain program activated a windows service which uses a
large ammount of system resources.

You can learn more about it by simply entering the full name of the file
using high ammounts of resources in to google.

Besides Spybot and Ad Aware, try:

Microsoft AntiSpyware
Trend Micro's online Housecall scan.

If these do not help, you can always re-format and re-install your XP.
Buying new PC is still a bit extreme for your problem.
