Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network browser doesn't work anym

G

Guest

Hi all,
Have a small Domain network (approx 10 PCs WinXP SP2 and 1 Win2000SP4 Server
as Domain Controller)

Have a strange problem with one PC...
On this one (and only on this one) when going to:
Start>My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>
Double clicking on <my Network> icon to browse the my Network resources
returns an 'Access denied - contact your network administrator' error like.

However all networked shared resources remain accessible from this PC using
ie: the Search "Computer" function or if they are previously defined in My
Local Network.

So in other words - everything works expect, for that PC, browsing "My
Entire Network" feature.

My guess it should be a Registry corruption....but who knows.
Any idea, help to fix this annoying behaviour will be appreciated.

Cheers,
Bernard

Bernard,

One of the most common causes of your problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component on the problem
computer. Read this article with an open mind.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

You could diagnose the problem, using "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net
config server", and "net config workstation", from the problem computer, and
from a working computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

A.. again configur yor said system on network by changing system name.

B.. add your system from NT server

Thanks Chuck for the tips and links.

I found a difference using "browstat status" between the working and
non-working PC:

WORKING PC SHOWS:
=====
Status for domain BRUSSELS on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{2D61EB83-95A3-4BDF-BE02-7DDD0B0BB3E7}

Seems to be an "error type 5" but don't know how to handle this.
Suggested tips doesn't seems to help.

However changing the Computer's Name, as suggested by ASIS in the other
answer, fixes the problem - but I do not want to change Names for other
reasons.

Any further ideas of what to check next ?

Tanks ASIF,

Yes it works by changing the Computer's Name...
however I do not want to change its name!

So it seems to be a problem with the current Computer's "definition" Name or
so and associated parameters within the server.
Is it possible to "delete" this record definition in the server to have a
new one with the same name automatically redefined and how to do that ?

Bernard,

Do you have a DHCP server?

Let's look at "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config
workstation", from these same 2 computers:

Hi Chuck,

Yes the Server also acts as DHCP, DNS and WINS server.

"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config
workstation", from these same 2 computers:
return "identical results" except for IP and MAC addresses and Computers's
Names
of course.

Cheers,
Bernard

Bernard,

I'm sure that everything looks "identical". Did you read the guides on
interpreting the content? There is probably a clue in there somewhere.

Or simply provide "ipconfig /all" from THREE computers (the problem one, and 2
properly working ones), and we can do relational analysis.

The third option is your paying me to visit in person (I don't fly cheap). ;)

And since this may take a while, your posting your answers after mine would be a
good idea.

OK, thanks Chuck for your patience...
flying to me is not an option unfortunately (where do you live ? - we are in
Belgium (Europe)).

OK back to the problem,
Please look at the complete listings of "ipconfig /all" , "net config
server" and "net config workstation" on 2 working PCs and the one with the"
browse" problem.

notes:
1/MAC addresses are deleted for security reasons!
2/191.168.2.2 is the IP address of Magritte (DC, DHCP,DNS, WINS server)
3/191.162.2.1 is the IP address our our WAN Router
4/user account = administrator (with all priviledges)
5/all login on "local" machine

Hi Chuck,
Got it working back by forcing "Enable" NetBios over TCP/IP" instead of the
"Default" setting.

Still don't understand why it works with "default" setting on most
workstations and not on other... but anyway it works back.

Thanks again for your tips, the solution was in front of my eyes by reading
your documentation!

Hi Bernard,

The NetBT setting is a mysterious item, and I am still searching for adequate
documentation about diagnosing it.

So what you're saying is that, though "net config" showed
Server is active on
NetbiosSmb (000000000000)
NetBT_Tcpip_{300D01C3-7FEA-4102-A182-17BEF139C779} (001111368478)
it didn't actually work without forcing NetBT. And that on a domain, with a
DHCP server set to Enable NetBT?

Thanks for the feedback.
