Entering data with form

I know I'm doing something incredibly stupid, but I can't find the mistake.
I have a table populated with a field consisting of a number, space, equal
sign, space and then text string. There are two other fields, one for the
preceding number and one for the following text string. I have successfully
populated all of the records in an associated form with the correct numbers
and text strings, but for some reason the table records are not similarly
filled.
Please help.
