1. Open XP's "Help and Support" program
2. In the Search box type in: STANDBY , and hit enter.
3. Click on the topic titled: "Change the elapsed time before
your computer automatically goes on Standby".

The other suggestions work if the comuter is in fact going into standby or
hibernation. The only problem I see is that neither of those close down
your programs. When the computer comes back up, everything would be as it
was before it went into the standby or hibernate mode.

Is it just turning off, so when you power back on nothing you were working
on is open?

oops over keen on the enter button there
i could have various progs like WINMX and my broadband up, IE6 etc, then the next thing i know is that i get the blue screen with 'user' and the flower thing on the right hand side, on clicking this windows returns and all the apps i had running are now closed including my broadband connection !!!!!

Then it's not going into hibernate or suspend. Unfortunately, I'm not sure
what would be causing it. Have you run a full virus scan? Checked to make
sure that you have a firewall enabled? (search for firewall in Help and
Support).

Maybe Carey or someone else might have another idea?

There is a possibility that the computer is trying to shut down and
restart due to a fatal error. Check Event Viewer logs for errors that
might relate. In Control Panel/System applet/Advanced Tab/Startup and
Recovery section/ Settings button/System Failure section/uncheck the box
Automatically restart. Check the boxes Write an Event to System log and
Send Administrative alert. Click OK.

If there is a fatal error, the computer will now (hopefully) display an
blue screen error message. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is
to copy down that error message exactly and post back.

Copy the entire contents of a BSOD? It'd be better to just copy the first
few lines, we don't need all the code that follows...

Well, since she's running WinMX, the first thing to do is look for
viruses. The second thing to do is clean out the spyware.
