ending program now

I have a laptop running on Windows XP 2002,Home Edition. Had it in for a
complete checkup. Recently installed an HP printer, scanner, copier. Now 2 new
icons appear in system tray. One says "safely remove hardward" and the other
says "HP digital imaging monitor". When I double click the "safely remove
icon", it states that along with my psc I have a USB mass storage device and
it shows as a "removable disk "E" under "My Computer" . I am told by HP that
these two icons are there because of the new software I downloaded. Now,
when I go to shut down, I get the box saying it is "ending program now" and
it automatically closes the box without me having to do anything. I have
checked the task manager and there are no applications running before I shut
down.

I am totally confused as to why this message keeps appearing. I was hoping
someone could shed some light on this subject for me. I don't know that much
about computers, so if it is anything involved, I will probably have to
take it back in for a service call,

The message keeps appearing because the software that is still running
will not close as fast as WindowsXP would like it to, when it (XP) is
shutting down. Therefore XP has to "invoke" just that little bit extra
process to close the program before XP can shut down.

"The box" indicating "ending program now" should have the program name
in the title bar - that'll tell you the offending program.

I would guess that neither of these icon programs are that essential
to be running in the background all the time - when you want to print,
they will start up when necessary. Try turning them off.

Start -> Run -> msconfig <ENTER> -> Startup ... identify the
offensive (oops, sorry, I mean offending) programs and untick them.

Printing still work OK? Good. If not, go back in and retick them ..
(but you're unfortunately stuck with HP once again inflicting it's
incidious software on another computer user).

Does your new HP device have a card reader? If so, that is the USB mass
storage device drive E. The Safely Remove Hardware is a Windows XP icon and
function. One of the times it appears is when you have a USB mass storage
device. It's purpose is to ensure that Windows XP has complete all pending
functions {such as writing to the device} before you unplug it from your
computer. This function is critical if you are using an external hard drive
to ensure that pending files are completed before you unplug the USB cable
for the external drive. For a card reader incorporated in a printer, you
should never have a concern unless you desire to unplug the printer. You
can use the management of Notification Area icons to always hide Safely
Remove Hardware if you desire.

The HP Digital Image Monitor icon is coming from the image management
software you installed with your HP device. It functions to start the HP
software when an applicable image is detected. You should have an option in
your HP software to not display the icon. Where depends on the HP software
and version you have installed. You should be able to find the control in
the options for your HP software.
