HI

I had encrypted files on a seperate partition before having a problem with
Windows XP, Simplest fix was to reimage C drive from a ghost backup that I
have that has the whole system, updates and major programs ready so that I
can refresh the computer when necessary. Problem is that even though all the
user accounts and passwords are there that were used to encrypt the files I
cannot now get access to them, it says I do not have permission.

What is the problem if I am reimaging the identical setup, shouldn't all the
user accounts etc be identical as well?

If you encrypted files, then you should have backed up the encryption certificates, as well.

I didn't...but I don't see why I would need them, wouldn't they have been
restored as is during the ghosting? Thats the part I don't get, all the uder
accounts exist as they did when I orginally encryted so what is missing? Why
does it not recognise the original user?

If you encrypted the files after you made the Ghost image then the image and
the account will not contain the generated keys used to allow your account
to do encryption.
Since these are randomly generated the first time you do an encryption then
even after the restore of the GHost image the keys generated for this
account will not match the ones used to do the encryption from the time
before the restore.

Michael,
I had this problem and there is no real way to fix it, but you can get
around it. Ok go to your safe mode and go into your Administrator account.
Goto the files and right click, goto sharing and security. Now when your in
there you should be able to bypass the encryption. If not...then depending
on the encryption then you should try to crack it yourself. Happy cracking.
