encrypt CDR with password ?

Is there any freeware out there which would password protect a CDR to burn
(with strong encryption, preferably). I want to password protect a CDR with
Word Docs, mp3s etc on it. I don't want to password protect / encrypt each
individual file, so i'm looking for software to mass encrypt the whole CD so
that when it is put in the tray, it asks for a password (which cannot easily
be cracked).

Also, it would be even better if the CD worked on any PC, i.e. that it would
work on any PC which didn't have the software on used to make it a protected
/encrypted CDR.

The simpler the software the better !

Cheers

For Windows: make a 600 MB container using Truecrypt or similar program,
put your files to be protected in the container, and burn the container
file to the CD.

The computer reading the encrypted file on the CD must have Truecrypt
installed. Look at Traveler mode in DriveCrypt ($$$$) for a more
portable scheme.

In Linux it may be possible to directly encrypt a CD.

I use Dekart Private Disk Light for this very same purpose,
it is very small (400KB) and simple so you can put it on the CD
and run it on any PC from the CD, no install needed

Tried Dekart PD, but i cannot get working with it. It seems i need to create
an image file first. I just want to bung a few files on a disk, send it to a
friend. He then sticks it in his PC, it asks for a password then he can use
the files, but reasonably strong encryption..

Cheers though

How do you manage that as it needs to be installed.

Hello Andy!

You could use CryptoExpert 2004 Pro. It creates encrypted "container"
to be mounted as virtual hard drive.
I.e. you can create 600 mb container on your hard drive, mount it,
then copy all necessary files to the mounted hard drive, dismount it,
then burn single container file to CD-R.
In the future, it will just be needed to 'mount' this container file
directly from CD (enter password to get access to container's
contents).
There is also available freeware version of CryptoExpert (Lite ver),
but is has ability to create 20 mb containers only...

I installed it on my Windows Me machine with the downloaded installer
Than copied the Dekart-directory to a CD and ran the program from CD
on a Windows XP where Dekart hadn't been installed

This worked perfectly, so I think that the installer only copies files
to the Dekart directory and doesn't use registry or files in the
windows-system directory

Thanks for the info.

By the way, I experimented with transferring a container file and
PrvDiskLight files to a floppy. A minimum 1MB container file and all
the files in the PrvDiskLight dir are to big but I found out that you
only need the PrvDiskLight.exe and pdapi.dll files for the program to
run.

Do you know of a way to disable that annoying error noise made when
the program asks you to confirm your request to end the program.
