enabling HyperThreading

I have a P4 3.06 Ghz CPU that is supposedly capable of
Hyperthreading. I have absolutely no clue on how to
actually enable it though. I was hoping it would just be
as simple as going to the bios and choosing enable.
However, when I did this all that happend was 2
processors were listed in device manager instead of just
one. Everywhere else I look still acts like HT is
disabled. I have tried searching intels site as well as
several other places for how to enable it but none of it
makes sense to me. I read something about having to
change things in the kernal but I have yet to find
a "step by step idiot proof guide" on how to do that. I'm
using Windows XP Pro. Can any of you help with this?

The P4 3.06 supports HT. (It's the only 533 MHz FSB P4 that does, I
believe.)

If your CPU shows up as 2 (logical) processors in Device Manager, it seems
that XP is recognizing it. Another check would be going to System Devices in
Device Manager, and checking Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System. If it says
"multiprocessor PC", I expect that means that the correct HAL is installed.

I don't know what you mean by "Everywhere else I look still acts like HT is
disabled." I'm probably displaying my ignorance, but I don't know where
hyperthreading would be obvious.

Sisoft Sandra (http://www.sisoftware.net/) informs me that my CPU does smt
(symmetric multi-threading). Sandra also runs a CPU benchmark. You can use
an option to turn off hyperthreading; that ought make a noticeable change.

Maybe your system doesn't have a problem, after all.

Another place to look is in the task manager if you see two seperate cpu
history windows HT is enbabled if not double check the option to display two
if there isn't anything you have to reinstall to enable HT sucks don't it ?
I had to do just that.

Umm the 2.4 also supports HT on
the 800 FSB. And yup ONLY the
3.06 supports HT on the 533 mhz

I just brought a 2.4 800mhz cpu today
and installed it, and yup.

All it does it as Bob said, its

I would say it doesnt show
2 CPU's because I installed the new CPU
on a PC with XP currently installed on it.

And all XP changed was the processor

I think I wld haveta reformat in order to show
2 CPU's.
