Hello,

I remember that in windows 9x, one would easily go to say HardDisk
properties and check/uncheck the "DMA" option for the drive.

How can I enable or disable DMA for HDD or CDROM in WinXP?

Hi,

1. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.

2. Click System Tools, and then click Device Manager.

3. Click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.

4. Click the specific controller for which you want to configure DMA/PIO
settings.

5. Click the Advanced Settings tab.

6. In the Transfer Mode box, click either PIO Only or DMA if available.

Or:

Go to Start\Settings\Control Panel. Double-click the System icon in the
System Properties dialog box. Select the Device Manager tab. Click the +
plus sign next to the cd-rom icon. Double-click the icon for your cd-rom
drive. Click the Settings tab and de-select the DMA check box in the Options
panel. Click Ok twice.

Hello Kelly,

I don't have the "Advanced Tab".

I double clicked on my "SONY CD-ROM CDU5221" and got only 4 tabs:
"General" "Properties" "Volumes" "Driver" , non of these pages show any
button or label that show possibility to modify DMA settings.

Never use PIO mode, always use DMA. PIO uses your CPU.

Yes, that's what I want to do...but didn't not find the page where to change
that.
I think that XP enables DMA for harddisks while cdroms are P I/O ?

You may not have the options because some system BOIS has done the settings.

Go check your BIOS settings for hard drive and you may find some settings
there too.

Good luck.

I do not know if this would help? If the Sony's motherboard is using an
Intel Chipset, then use Intel Application Acelerator software to "Enable
DMA" support.

Y.
