I have seen similar questions posted but I haven't managed to get the problem
solved: suddenly my computer started behaving strangely and now, after
logging in, I only get the wallpaper and the taskbar.
When I pressed the F8-key during the reboot I got a message about failing to
reconstitute data due to a read failure.

When I tried running sfc /scannow the computer suddenly get restarted
(before ending the scanning, I believe).

If it is a virus, what can I do? I can't download anything because I cannot
get IE started...

Any clues/help will be highly appreciated

Boot to setup CD, and press 'r' for recovery Console, to run the command

CHKDSK /R

Thanks, Mark!

I'm running XP Home Edition (in case this explain the following problems I
have encountered):
- with the CD inserted I get two options (restoring XP or booting from the
command line). I chose the second one, but it doesn't recognize "r" as a
command.
- I tried then directly with "chkdsk /r", but it doesn't recognize the
switch /r, it only accepts /F (fix) and /V.
- I tried with /F (it ran TOO fast, in my mind). But my next question is,
how do I proceed from that point? Which command tells the computer to
continue with the booting process?

Thanks again!

from the RC prompt, you could type LOGON, with a blank password.

I cannot make it work. LOGON is not recognized as a valid command. I believe
my problem is that I haven't got in the RC yet. After choosing to "boot to
command prompt from CD-ROM" I don't think I'm in the RC, and I haven't
figured out how to know which commands are available.
By the way, which drive I should choose to run the CHKDSK/F? I'm assuming
the default (A:), is that right?

I finally managed to run the RC (but not from the CD) and it solved all the
problems.

Thanks a lot!!!!
