DVD+R mediat 1t 16X is still relatively new. Even though the
specifications state that the Emprex should be able to burn
such media, there have been recommendations by several other
media suppliers, e.g., Memorex, of the need to have the most
current firmware updates for the burner. Also, take note that
even though the media may be even 4X or faster, many movies
are not burned at even that speed, esp. when compression is
involved to fit them into 4.7 GB.

I had the identical problem with the same emprex burner and TDK 16x
media (both from Fry's ;-).

The burner recognized the media as 12x max, and choked halfway through
the burn.
I downloaded the most current firmware from the Emprex site. Now the
burner recognizes the media correctly as 16x, and appears to burn it
correctly at 16x speed. But, when I put the resulting DVD in my set
top player, it skips and freezes. When I burn this media at 8x speed,
everything works fine. Ah, well, 8x speed is still pretty good.
Perhaps other media or future firmware updates will improve the
situation.
I have two other Emprex burners (4x and 8x), and am well satisfied with
them. But as we all know, different set top players seem to prefer
different R+ and R- media from different vendors.
