Why does my embeded Excel file only work in the slide sorter view and not
when I view the slide show

We'd need more info; what does "work" mean in this situation?

That is, what's it do in sorter view that it doesn't so in slide show view?

In the sorter view the Excel file opens when I double click on it and in the
slide show view clicking on the Excel Icon results in advancing to the next
slide.
I followed these instructions for embeding a file:
Insert
Object
Create from file
Then I browsed for the file.
Check the link box and the display as icon box
Clicked OK

Do you mean in Normal or Slide view? You can't doubleclick on anything but
slides in Sorter view.

But that's a minor nit. Heres's what you need to do (in normal or slide view):

Rightclick the Excel icon and choose Action Settings then choose the Mouse Click
tab.
Click "Object Action"
Choose either Edit or Open (experiment to see which works best for you).
Click OK

Now try it in slide show view.
