Embedded video in ppt has black blotches during play

We have a simple Office2003 powerpoint presentation with an avi video
(cvid codec) embedded. During playback of the embedded clip random
black blotches (squares) appear throughout the video.
The same video clip plays cleanly and perfectly using every installed
standalone player.
Also, converting the ppt presentation to a PDF document also plays the
embedded video cleanly. The video was imported into Word - it too
plays w/o the black blotches.

The laptop is a ThinkPad X41
WinXP & Office2003 - all patched
Intel 915GM Graphic Driver updated to latest version
DirectX 9c - tried many different ajustments - no change.

There must be an issue between the X41 & PPT but am totally stumped.

Anyone else notice experience this issue w/ PPT embedded videos?

Tnx -- RH

I've run into this problem before and never found a solution. Anyone know if
this is fixed in Office 2007? (Or if it can be fixed in 2003 or Office XP?)

So far not fixed in Office2007beta. Just tried it - same square
blotches.

One of our grad students is doing a summer internship at MS. I'll
forward the info to him right now.

Austin,

Reading through the website it states:
" You may test your machine set up by manually starting the MCI player
and opening the media file to be tested. To do so click Start > Run and
type "mplayer.exe" in the command line box and click OK. (For
Windows2000 type "mplay32.exe" and for WindowsXP type "mplayer2.exe")
If this fails to start the player or if your PC can't locate it, use
the Windows search feature for "mplay*.exe" and it should find it for
you. Once found double click it to start it."

So, on Win2000 and XP systems I opened the AVI file in the respective
mplay* player - they both play fine - w/o the black blotches.

Are there still some differences between playing directly w/ mplayer2
(& mplay32) and with powerpoint?

Thanks,

GA

GA,

If it's playing in the MCI player properly but not in PPT it indicates to me
that the PC may be having difficulty doing both. (Playing the presentation
and the video at the same time) First thing I would do is clean up the hard
drive, delete all temporary files, and then defrag it.
