Emails not viewable

For some reason, all of a sudden my emails are not viewable unless I click
"View, Current View, Unread Messages".

I am receiving the icon that I have new email, and my Inbox Icon on the left
pane shows "1" or "2" (however many I have). However, it is ONLY viewable by
going through the above procedure.

I am using Outlook 2000 on Windows XP. I also have it password protected.

In addition, when I read the message after viewing it in the "Unread
Messages" mode, it's gone. Not in the inbox, not in deleted, nowhere.

Well, after you've read it, it's not "unread" any more, so the "Unread
Messages" view won't show it. It's still in your Inbox. Click View>Current
View>Messages, then click the "Received" column.

Thanks, but that didn't help at all. I probably didn't make myself too clear.
As you said, obviously it won't appear in my "Unread" box b/c at that point
it's been read.

The MAJOR problem is that all NEW msgs are only viewable by clicking "View
Unread Messages". And when I read them, I can't find them anywhere. Nowhere
to be found in my standard inbox view.

I think I just figured it out. Here's what I did:

FROM OUTLOOK MAIN SCREEN
View/Current View/Customize Current View

I added the field of "Read (past tense) emails". It threw an envelope icon
on the top along with "Subject", "Received", "From". Perhaps this was
accidentally deleted and is what started this whole problem. As soon as I
added the "Read" icon, all of the unreads that were read populated.
