Emails Don't Get Past the Outbox

I am using Outlook 2003 SP2 and I am having problems once I compose an email.
I then click on Send and it goes to me Outbox. However, once I hit the
send/receive button, I receive email but the email I am trying to send just
sits there in my Outbox.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Ron,
Are you using exchange or are you just doing this from home.... If you are
doing this from home check your SMTP settings were you configure your
account, also what happens when you click on test in this section?

Hello again,
Ignore what I just wrote at the bottom as its rubbish, if it was your SMTP
settings you would receive a error message, what you have described can
usally be caused by your outlook being in offline mode, details on how to
check this are in the help menu.

When you click your outbox and view the item as its sitting in your
outbox, is it in an italicized state, or normal font type? has to be
in an italicized state, or outlook won't send it. If its in a regular
bold type font, look at your anti-virus email scanner. It its scanning
it before Outlook gets to send it, the a/v scan process may possibly be
your issue -
