emailing in different languages

hi there. i've been trying to write emails in japanese.
i've got the language settings down correctly so that i
see the hiragana and katakana characters i write, but the
problem is always at the end: none of the people i've
sent the emails have been able to read them.
specifically, the email comes to them in code ("#15634
#16458 #19785"). if anyone can suggest a way to correct
this (or for me to tell my readers how to set themselves
up), i would appreciate greatly. thanks.
