Hi,

I am trying to email a word document to an XP machine from my laptop which
is Vista and the recipient is saying she cannot open the attachment because
she has to purchase the software to be able to open it! Is this correct or
is one of us doing something wrong?????

If the recipient does not have MS word then she will not be able to open it.
Try to either save it as a raw .doc file and send it to her again. You can
find this under "save as" and change the file type.

The fact that one machine is Vista and the other XP is irrelevant.

Does the recipient have Word installed? Not everyone does; it's *not*
part of Windows. If she doesn't and doesn't want to buy it, she can
download the free Microsoft Word viewer at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en
or http://tinyurl.com/3qlb4. That will permit her to view your
attachment, but not edit it.

Another possible issue is that you are using Word 2007, and sending
her the file in its new format, docx. If that's the case, even if she
has Word installed, unless it's Word 2007, she will have a problem
with it. There's a patch available from Microsoft that will permit her
to read docx files, or you can resend it as a .doc file--instead of
doing "Save," just do "Save as," and change the type to .doc.
