Emailed document not attaching to correct template

We have a template containing styles autotext and macros, all available from
a toolbar, that are used to create certain standard docs. This template is
copied out to the same location on everyone's c: drive so everyone has access
to their own copy.
A document is created by Bob using the template from his c: drive. He can
use all of the styles autotext and macros from the toolbar. He then emails
the document to Fred so that Fred can continue with it. Fred can open the
document, but the document is trying to attach to the wrong template. Fred
has to manally tell the document which template to attach to through Tools >
Templates and Add-ins > Attach. Once attached to the template on Fred's c:
drive, the toolbar is again available that contains the styles autotext and
macros.
This worked perfectly on Word 2000, but since XP and Word 2003, it doesn't.
Please help!

To which template is the file trying to attach itself?
