Email, unread but received, cannot be found in my inbox

I'm new to using both Vista and Outlook 2007. I see, in the lower right
corner of my screen, a shadow email when it is received, but if I don't open
it immediately and sometimes even if I do, it disappears completely from my
Inbox and doesn't seem to materialize anywhere else. I am not deleting
email; it just disappears. Any suggestions on how I can retrive these items?
 
Is the view in your Inbox filtered? Make sure you are viewing all messages:

View > Current View > make sure Messages is highlighted (not anything else,
like unread messages).
