email notification sound setting

Recently my new email notification sound tunred to a "beep". I was quite
happy with the "Notify.wav" sound that is still selected in the control panel
setting under Sounds and Multimedia. I can't seem to change the beep sound to
anything else. I can turn off all sounds by de-selecting the check box in
Outlook/tools/options/preferences/advanced email.
Can anyone help return control of sound type to me?

I'm having similar difficulties only I don't get any sound at all upon the
receipt of new emails and I've checked all my setting too and all looks ok.
I'm posting this response so that I'll get notified also of any further

What type of account is it? Are there new messages going into your primary
Inbox?

My Outlook is linked to only one email system that is Microsoft-exchanged
based. All mail goes into my primary inbox. My desktop alert icon appears
when new mail arrives so I don't think it's related to were my mail is being
directed.

I have found the problem. See Microsoft tech note:

You have to clear the null value in the root of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER
registry hive. Easy to do by following the tech note. A "Weather Channel"
download put something in this root key.
