new mail notification

When new mail arrives in my inbox I get a beep rather then the default new
mail notification sound. Windows default is set as the sound scheme in the
control panel and when i play the sound from the sound scheme it is the
proper new mail sound. WindowsXP Pro and Outlook 2002 and NIS 2005.

What is causing the beep for new mail?

I had the same problem! Here is what fixed my machine.

Click on the start button. Go to Run Type in regedit

Once registry editor has opened up left click on the Hkey_Current_User key.
In the right hand area you will find a binary string value that says
Name: (default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: VALUE NOT SET

Now if your data does NOT say value not set simply right click on the
default string and delete. Windows will immedately create you a new
one. Restart your computer and you should hear sounds.

I had some value of \Program\WEATH...EXE instead of Value not set.
Looks like some crap that came over with AOL IM or something - one of those
weather things.
Thanks for the help. I also had an entry under the HKEY CLASSES ROOT too.
Blew that away as well and I was good to go.
