OE 2006 email notification alert

For years, the email notification alert worked. About 6 months ago, the
alert never sounded when an email arrived. I've gone to Tools, Options,
General and have checked the box for "play sound . . . "

I've also gone to the Control Panel and chosen Sounds, Speech and Audio
Devices. I've then gone to "sounds" and under "program events" I've found
"new mail notification". I've changed the sound to be played to various
sound choices but still no sound. The volume control is not muted and is set
on loud.

I don't know what else to try.
