I installed Office 2003. I am running Windows 2000 Pro. At first an Outlook
email link opened one window and another small one saying Locate Link
Browser. I pointed the locate to Internet Explorer. Now two windows open
each time. My only browser IE. Any ideas? Thanks

Did you recently uninstall Netscape or another browser?
Go to control panel, internet options, programs tab, and tick the box that
says "internet explorer should check to see whether it is the default
browser". Click OK. Launch IE. It should prompt you - see if this resolves
the issue.

There has never been another browser on this computer, only IE. The
(internet explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser) box
is checked. It does not prompt me on restart. Problem still exists.

Another piece of interesting data. If an IE window is open prior to opening
the Outlook email link, only one window opens for the link, even if the
previously open IE window is blank. If I close the pre-existing open window
and the email link window, and then reopen the email link, two windows for
the link are opened. Every time an Outlook link is opened resulting in two
windows, one of the window blocks in the task bar flashes blue until both
windows are displayed.

Thanks for your help.

Not sure if this will help, but it's a good idea anyway: go to Office Update
(from your Windows Update page) and make sure Office is fully patched. Same
with Windows Update.

I updated office and windows update yesterday. Just tried again on both and
no updates were needed.

Today's other experiments: Did an uninstall of Office 2003 and IE 6.0.
Reinstalled both followed by Windows update and Office update. No change in
results. Could there be a file association problem or worse yet, a registry
problem?

Thanks

My Internet provider is Road Runner. It comes with a monitor/repair program
called Road Runner Medic. It runs in the background after boot up. Its Icon
shows in the task bar. As long as this program is active in the background,
two identical windows open when an Outlook 2003 email URL is clicked on.
When Road Runner Medic is closed, Outlook works fine. Closing this
application is accomplished by right clicking on the task bar icon and
selecting exit. This may be the cause of the similar problems that others in
this site have had. Thanks again for your help.

Aha! Glad you found it.
I never install anything from the CDs ISPs give me - esp. for cable; you
don't need it.
