You might download and install Windows Live Mail, which does work
with Hotmail:

Hotmail as Default (XP or Vista):

I don't think it's an MSN version. Hotmail won't work under
Windows Mail even if you change the defaults.

Hi Frank. My problem seems almost just the opposite. I run Vista Ultimate
and have always been a MSN browser and MSN Mail user. It worked fine under
XP Pro. Under Vista, I do not have Windows Live Mail selected as the
default e-mail client, I have selected "Use my current e-mail client". Yet
it continues to open Live Mail from any mailto link. Each time that I start
MSN it asks me if I want to make it the default mail client and I always
click on "Yes". However, nothing changes and it continues to open Live Mail
whenever I click on a mail link.

Any nice little programmatic fixes for that? :)

Passport and Windows Live ID are the same thing.

Very few of us have MSN Mail, so it is impossible to give you advice
based on real experience with that service.
If you pay a service fee for MSN Mail, they should be willing to
assist you with this problem.

A Passport/Windows Live ID is not related to your Windows logon. It is what
is used to log onto Hotmail or onto Microsoft Communities for posting from
the Web interface.
