Windows Mail terminates connection when importing mail

I have used suggestions found here to setup my MSN (hotmail) account on
Windows mail, and can sucessfully send e-mail; however I have not been able
to receive mail. I get the following after a few minutes of being connected:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'MSN mail', Server: 'pop3.live.com', Protocol: POP3,
Port: 995, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

This error indicates an incoming issue (POP3) - not a send issue (SMTP) . .
.. . . Do you have the POP3 and SMTP servers backwards? One MS / WM thing I
don't like on those account setup screens is that on the Servers tab they
put incoming before outgoing, but when you go to the Advanced tab they put
outgoing before incoming, making it easy to put in the server info in
reversed order . . . . . .

Here's the Live.com setup:

Server names and ports:
POP3 = pop3.live.com Port = 995
SMTP = smtp.live.com Port = 587

Checkboxes you need to check include:

Server Tab: "My server requires authentication" (Click "Settings" button
also and fill in "Log on Using" email address - *** but do NOT check the
checkboxes there . . . .)

Advanced Tab: BOTH outgoing and incoming - "This server requires a secure
connection (SSL)"

General Tab (if desired but generally recommended): "Include this account
when receiving mail or synchronizing"

Should work - if you get errors post the entire error message (cut-n-paste)
for further assistance.

You have failed to enable the mandatory SSL option.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced,
then select the SSL option (two places).
