email downloads but doesn't appear in folders for a day

I logon and open Outlook Express, then hit send and receive to download my
email. The download box says (for example) receiving 1 of 12 messages. Only
2 appear in my inbox and 4 in my junkmail folders. The rest of the messages
do not appear in any folder. A day later I logon again and there are the
missing emails in my inbox. What happens to them in the meantime?
