As stated, in Outlook I have a desktop alert informing me that I have new,
unopened, mail. However, there is nothing in my inbox and nothing in my junk
email folder either. I just installed BitDefender anti-virus software and I
suspect the anti-spam feature has blocked this first message. (I'll contact
them too.) Nonetheless, I'll post this question here, just in case someone
has a solution for me. I'll include my thanks in advance, this is fairly
weird. (I have to at least see the message before I decide I want to read or
delete it.)

I have the same message, but it is on my log on screen. "you have one unread
email". There are no unread emails on my system. As a cure (I thought) I
went into Outlook Express (which I hate and never use) and deleted the
welcome message. This did not take care of the issue.

I too have installed BitDefender, and I too thought that this may be the
case. So, I uninstalled it, and did a fresh install. Same ole' result.
Looks like the only way to get rid of that message is to disable it, but that
does not seem like the right answer to me.

http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/winxp_unread.htm should help.

After furious head scratching, Robert Rees asked:
