Eltorito CD

ms

Hi,

I am trying to create bootable CD. I have created my preFBA iso file. I
copy it to CD and
can view the .iso file in Windows explorer as a file. Is this correct as i
read in the help that
the CD should not be readable. Anyway i then run FBA with EWF disabled ,
Ram Reg mode
with CD in drive.
I check FBA but no mention of Eltorito CD or even EWF running. Ewfmgr says
it is unable to
find protected volume. I am still using SP1. Has anyone any ideas or
comments on above.

Hi Slobodan

At end of fbalog file i have no mention of ewf starting, i've checked i
have the reg keys set up in post FBA
image and then reboot but still no ewf entries in fba. When i type ewfmgr
in cmd prompt it comes back saying
unable to find an ewf volume. I built image for ewf in Ram Reg mode. Is
there any other rg keys i can check to
find out why it is failing.

Hi ms,

If you are using Reg RAM EWF approach then you will not see any mention of EWF in FBA.log this is actually normal and expected
behavior.

ewfmgr in reg mode will give you error.
Try using "ewfmgr c:" instead.

Also triple check that all registry entries related to EWF are there.

If you have problems please export services\ewf branch to reg file and also make sure that you have followed procedure for setting
upperfilter value.

Slobodan
PS:
This is my last post for tonight :-(

Your method is not correct. If you can see a .iso file on the CD in Windows
Explorer, that means the ISO image has not been copied to the CD correctly.
You need to use an ISO-enabled CD-burning program (such as Adaptec Easy CD
Creator or Nero) to burn the CD - this is also true of the final bootable
CD. Using the default Windows XP CD burning facility will not work. When
the CD is properly burned, you will not be able to read its contents from
within Windows Explorer.
Anyway i then run FBA with EWF disabled , Ram Reg mode with CD in drive.

It's actually not necessary to configure EWF for RAM Reg operation in this
case - when you do the final steps of your El-Torito image preparation, all
of the settings will be taken care of for you.

If you're working with XPe SP2, bring in the "El Torito CD Support" macro
component and resolve dependencies, then make sure your EWF configuration is
set so "Start EWF Enabled" is unchecked. This should get you up and
running. :)

Let us know if you have any more questions. I'll be glad to help as much as
I can.

Seems like missing Enabled key issue again:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EWF\Parameters\Protected\Volume0]
"Enabled"=dword:1

ms,

You are missing EWF init call in FBA.log this indicate that you have
followed Reg RAM EWF article and that because of that you disabled EWF FBA
Init step.
You can either try to make it work or remove EWF components and add them
again to restore them to default.

In any case give us this registy key also as reg file.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}

reg file in attachement have only few registry entries. Someone said that
even without all these entries EWF will work, I have never tried it.
You can download my old RAM REG EWF component and doc that you can view from
CD from www.xpefiles.com

One other thing, from FBAlog has my Eltorito CD been recognised correctly.
What should i be looking for?

Hi ms,

One serious flaw in your class.reg file
"Upper Filters"=hex(7):45,00,57,00,46,00,00,00,00,00

This must be one word like "UpperFilters", registry entries are not things
to be taken lightly, they must match each letter or they are as if they do
not exist.

The reason why ewfmgr command is working is that EWF was not installed as
upper filter driver to any volume on your system.

Ms,

You should be able to browse El-torito volume from within XPe as regular HDD
and not be able to do that from XPP. (This is enough to figure out if it is
working or not)

Thanks, i can't see the contents of my eltorito CD within Xpe it appears
empty just like XPP so something must
have gone wrong. I used Roxio disc copier to burn the iso file. Under
HKLM/System/mounted device i see
Dosdevices/F : and then in hex the code 4F544C45 so i thought something
maybe right. In fba there is no mention
of 'Searching for Eltorito disk' although the PNP seems to work ok.

Have you solved EWF problem?

If you see F: with 'ELTO' signature as you say that you see then it is
working. Although I wonder why it is empty when you browse it.
From XP Pro you should not be able even to browse it. And on XPe you should
se files that were present on partition which you used for creating iso
image with hd2iso.
In fba there is no mention
of 'Searching for Eltorito disk' although the PNP seems to work ok.

And it won't be any mentions these since you are using Reg configured RAM
EWF, but this is not a reason for concern.

Hi Slobodan

I corrected the UpperFilters error and tried again but still when i try
ewfmgr c: -enable i get
'Failed getting protected volume config with error 1'. This was the only
change i made.
I am now a bit stuck. Any ideas what to check.

hi ms,

You said that you are using SP1? Right?
What EWF QFE do you use?
If you made change from regedit make sure that you reboot computer twice.
Please send us registry entries again there should be change in services
brach as well. EWF should have bound to volumes and we should see that.
Make sure that your ARC path matches the one that you use in boot.ini from
booting XPe.
BTW if F: is your ELTO volume then what are the D:, E:?

Hi Slobodan

Yes i am using SP1, however i was not using EWF QFE 823025. Many thanks i
just noticed. This i think solved
the EWF problem, ewfmgr c: works now. I had my reg edits in TD. My target
machine has 2 ROM
drives, setup is C = hard disk, D =DVD ROM E= CD/RW I have the
Eltorito in E all the time.

Next i enabled ewf with command ewfmgr c: -enable then rebooted confirmed
it was enabled then ran
etprep /all, rebooted to WINPE ran hd2iso copied iso file back to dev
machine and created post FBA
boot CD. I then booted from this CD. Target took a few minutes to come to
explorer shell. However the
Start button/ bar did not appear. A couple of minutes later i got the
error message Windows - Delayed write failed
unable to save all data to file F: Data has been lost. These delayed
write failed messages then kept appearing
the start button never appeared. F is my new mounted Eltorito CD drive for
some reason.

Anyway because of your help ewf works, i feel i'm almost there just need
to resolve the error above. Any ideas.

Hi ms,

If you are still using reg configured RAM EWF then if EWF is enabled etprep
will not be able to write changes to disk.
You will either have to commit EWF, or enable it just before you call
etprep.
Or you can manualy delete all entries from MountedDevices so that XPe when
it boot from El-torito do clear assignement of volume letters.

In your case if you examine mounted devices you will see that volume letters
never swapped and that El-torito volume will be F: instead of C:.

So are you saying i enable ewf, run etprep then reboot so machine comes up
with ewf enabled. Then
shutdown and boot to WinPE and create my iso. Or after enable ewf then run
etprep should i reboot to WinPE straightaway.

Also if one just deletes mounted devices there is no need to run etprep is
this correct. So i would enable
ewf delete mounted devices and reboot to WinPE and create iso.

ms,

As you know changes to registry must be written, during the shutdown. How
will you do this is up to you.
You can either commit already enabled EWF.
Or you can set EWF to enable itself on next boot, by using ewfmgr
C: -enable.
Also if one just deletes mounted devices there is no need to run etprep is
this correct.
Most likely. etprep set CD realted drivers to be loaded by ntldr. but in SP1
I have seen that these values are already set without using etprep, and so
you can skip using etprep as long as you empty MountedDevices.
