effect of record mode on file size

This may sound like a dumb question. Does the mode at
which you record on your DV cam have any effect on the
final rendered movie file size? DVDs claim they can hold
4.7GB or 120 mins of high quality video. The consensus on
this board is that you get maybe 55-60 mins from a DV-AVI
file burned to DVD. On the back of the DVD box the video
modes mirror the modes from a VCR where SP =120mins, LP
=240mins and EP=360mins. That is different from my DV cam
where SP=60 mins and LP=120. I bought the higher quality
SONY metal tapes which are "recommended" for LP. Cost 2x
as much but hold 2x as much high quality video as compared
to other D8 tapes. If I record under LP is the video
coming in through the firewire any different than if
recorded under SP mode? Are there any effects due to the #
of frames or time stamp issues that would cause the file
to be larger? I would think that the size is solely based
on time where 1min =178MB for a DV-AVI file but I just
thought I'd ask.

DV-AVI coming in via firewire is fixed at 720x480 pixels and 29.97 fps for
NTSC, so it wouldn't make any difference in the size of the DV-AVI file on
the computer (12-13 GB per hour), but the visual quality of the video might
be a bit less in LP mode versus SP.
