I have friend who is not so great with computers... long story short..
somehow he has managed to mess up the shell in such a way that if he
clicks on a folder he does a Search instead of opening it.

Any ideas ? i told him to export HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory so i could view
it, but looking at my own registry i cant find any obvious values to fix
this problem.

NodeZero,

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
Click Modify on the Edit menu.
Type none in the Value data box, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.

If this problem occurs with drives, do the same here:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell

Alternate Method - Simplest ever:

Click [Start] [Run] and type "REGSVR32 /i SHELL32"

In any folder go Tools, Folder Options, File Types, and compare his
settings: find/open/explore on "Folders" to yours.
