Edit using Frontpage instead of Word

G

Guest

I've been trying to edit our webpage using Frontpage. We have been able in
the past to click on"edit" on the website under "file" and select "edit using
MS frontpage." Now, all the only option is to edit with "Word." I have gone
and changed the HTML editor to Frontpage and i still get the optio to use
Word.
Any ideas?

Also, regardless if I can edit using word, I'm not prompted to enter my
username and password to access the server where my files are housed from my
ISP. I checked with my ISP and all the files are there.

Bottom line, I cannot save any changes to my website.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've tried that. But, i did not mention that we recently had our PC serviced
with the HD being wiped out. So, our webfiles were lost due to my oversight
of not backing them up. The webfiles are ok under my ISP's web server.
I tried opening the main page using FP and tey open as a word file rather
than FP. And still, i'm not prompted for a username/password.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

How are you trying to open the live/remote site in FP, and does the live/remote site have the FP
extensions installed?

There should also be an edit icon on the toolbar that will let you edit the
page that is open in the browser. Depending on what applications that you
have installed on your PC there could be a number of programs that should
show as options for editing HTML. There are five choices listed in my
browser that include Word, Excel, Publisher, Notepad and FrontPage. I have
FrontPage set as the default HTML editor and it is the only application that
shows when I go to the File menu in EI when I have a page displaying in the
browser. I've never tried opening a web that is on the server with Word so
I'm not sure how it would respond or if it would mess anything up for that
matter!! There may be a registry entry that is not getting changed when you
set FrontPage as the default editor in IE. I remember seeing that entry in
IE registry but I'll have to look again to see where it is.

If by live remote you mean my ISP web server, then yes, FP extensions are
installed and i reactivated them. I called my ISP and there are not issues
with the webserver and all my files are there. The files are not on my HD
anymore since i had it wiped out a couple of weeks ago. Edit with FP is not
an option when i try to edit the site...only edit with WORD.

Jeff,
I checked and the default HTML editor is Frontpage. However, my wife last
edited the site using Word b/c i did not reload FP at the time after i had my
PC serviced. Even using word, we still cannot make any changes nor are we
prompt to enter userid/password.

I'm at work now and FP is my default editor and Word is the only option when
i try to edit.

Have you tried re-installing FP?

Open the Site in FP (not from the Edit with button)
Open FP
File | Open Web/Site
once you've got it opened
File | Publish Web/Site
back down to your local machine.

Ok, in FP, i went to File>Open. I entered the web address and it opened in
Word as a read only file. Now, if i go to File> Open site, i enter the web
address and i get this message: "The folder.....isn't accessible. The folder
may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the
file name contains a /or \."

I loaded it last night for the first time since wiping out the HD. I have
the same problem here at work where i have FP installed.

I just tried to open one of my FrontPage webs that are on the server with
Word and I was asked for username/password. I'm not sure if editing a
FrontPage web with Word would "break" the FP extensions on the server or
not. I do know that the page that I opened on the server in Word did not
look like it normally does when opened in FrontPage. I think that the FP
extensions have been messed up and when you open a page from your browser
using the edit command it opens the page but you are not authenticated
because the extensions are broken. I can open most any page (such as the
Dell Home Page) using the edit command and am not asked for a
username/password. But in order to save the page it would have to be locally
and not all of the pages details are loaded in FrontPage....it's just text
and no graphics.
