edit (ungroup) excel chart in powerpoint 2007

Don W

Hello,
I'm using the trial version of Office 2007 (and looking forward to probably
upgrading back to 2003). I used to be able to paste an excel chart into
powerpoint, right click to ungroup all the chart elements and then edit as I
please. How is this done in 2007? The chart pasted into powerpoint remains an
excel chart and I have access only to the editing options available for a
chart, which are insufficient for my needs. Perhaps one option would be to
first paste the chart into photoshop or some other graphics program but I
need to be able to edit/move individual elements of the chart and not have it
treated as a single graphic.
Thanks.

Cut the chart, Paste Special (on the Home tab) and paste as EMF or WMF. Then
you can ungroup that (twice).

BTW- I just saw a previous post in this regard but an answer was not
available. Any fix for this issue yet apart from upgrading back to Office
2003?
Thanks

Thanks, problem solved. I believe my second post and your response just
crossed paths.

Actually, I spoke to soon. Pasting an excel graph as either a wmf or emf does
not have the same functionality as ungrouping did in powerpoint 2003. For
example, after ungrouping twice (the max times allowed), all similar objects
such as error bars or graph bars are treated as a single object. That is,
every error bar or graph bar present in a particular graph is a single object
that can't be ungrouped further. Thus, I am not able to edit/move individual
data representations or components of an excel graph.

So back to my original question . . .
Why was this funtionality hidden removed in powerpoint 2007? What is the
workaround?
Thanks

You are right, and I should have given you a heads up on that -- apologies,
I just didn't think of it.

The charts are generated in Excel, and it works the same way there. I don't
know of a workaround, and I don't know why this level of granularity was
removed. It frustrates me, too.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that does not seem to change how
Excel graphs are pasted into Powerpoint (or at least in a way relevant to
what I need to get done).
After pasting a graph, their is a clipboard icon to the lower right with
selections for pasting as a chart linked to excel data, an excel chart or as
a picture. None of those option allow me to ungroup the chart and move/edit
individual components of the chart.
More suggestions? Back to office 2003?
Thanks,

I tried creating new charts (after the registry change) in both Powerpoint
and Excel but they behave the same as before the registry change. From what I
understand, Graph.exe is not a stand alone program but instead is run within
another program. I must be doing something else wrong?

D

Don W

So MSGraph has to be run within another program? I tried creating new graphs
in Excel and Powerpoint. Again, I am unable to ungroup all of the objects of
the graph for subsequent editing. Any other options?
Thanks,

E

Echo S

You could also Insert | Object and choose MS Graph Chart from the list to
get an old-style Graph chart that will ungroup all the way.

The registry hack is exactly as it should be. I've double and triple checked
it. Perhaps it's related to using the trial version. But I'm obviously not
going to purchase the full version if one of the most important features I
need is no longer available.
2003 works fine for me and I don't have to use that damn annoying ribbon. I
will miss the to do bar in outlook though.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

If you do Insert, Chart in PPT, you should get an MSGraph chart instead of
an Excel
one; you'll get the old familiar interface from earlier Office versions
instead of
seeing Excel pop up to one side. If you're not seeing that, there's
probably
something wrong with the way you've done the registry change.

If you ARE seeing that, you'll still have to Copy/Paste Special/as EMF to
get the
chart into a form that can be ungrouped. But now it will ungroup into
individual
objects; it won't leave you with those odd chunks of things that won't
ungroup.
