Edit / Enter sign in lower left hand corner of spreadsheet

Windows XP. Office 2003. Excel 2003.

Edit / Enter signs in lower left hand corner of spreadsheet continually
flash back and forth (enter to edit to enter) as if a keyboard key is stuck
down. Applies to all spreadsheets. No Macros in spreadsheets.

Thought it was the keyboard, bought a new one, same thing happening.

Reinstalled Office 2003, still does it.

Making me crazy!!

Lower left hand corner? That is where you see your sheet names? - Sheet1,
Sheet2, Sheet3. there are no such options there?

Kassie,

Look immediately below where you are looking. It is not on the spreadsheet,
but on the border.

Thanks.

OK, with you now. That should normally show ready. If you are typing, it
should change to Enter, and if you edit in the cell, ie pressed F2, it should
show edit. Once you press Enter, or select another cell, it should revert to
Ready again.

Where you set this, I really do not know though.

This appears on the statusbar.

It's toggled by hitting the F2 key.

I don't have a guess why it's flashing for you. But I would try opening excel
in safe mode to see if that helps:

Close excel
Windows start button|Run
type:
excel /safe
file|open a test workbook

See if the problem continues.

Dave,

I tried F2, nothing happens. Opened excel in safe mode. Spreadsheet that
opened was flashing also.

Thanks. Any other ideas?

Gently bang on the keyboard????

But I would have guessed swapping the keyboard would have resolved that.
