"Move selection after Enter"

An annoying thing is happening in my spreadsheets. When I tab across,
filling in data as I go, and hit Enter when I get to the end, sometimes it
does exactly what I want it to do---it drops down to the next row and moves
to the far left where I started (only one row down, of course). But in
another spreadsheet, it just moves down to the cell below when I hit enter.
Now a new thing has cropped up that when I press Enter nothing happens. It
just sits there in the same cell. I've gone into Tools/Options/Edit tab and
changed it to "Left" after the "move selection after Enter", so it just moves
one cell left on the same row. I want it to return to the cell below the one
I started in before tabbing across the sheet. I am not using the arrow keys.
I use Tab. Why the variation of response, and how do I fix it. It's so
annoying. I'm using Excell 2003, SP3. Thank you.

Set the move after selection to "Down".

Tab, Tab,Tab then Enter should take you to start column one row down.

Gord, I have one file where that doesn't work. The file is locked. Only
certain rows are available to type in, but even when typing in the rows that
are available, and using the Tab key, when hitting Enter it simply moves to
the cell below the last one typed in. Connie

Yep.

That's the way it works on a protected sheet. Enter won't go back to start
column.

One way to overcome is to unlock the columns for entering data.

Then Tab your way through from left to right. Don't use the Enter key at
all.

You will move left to right then down to next row at first unlocked column.
