ECS K7VMM+ AMD MB

Hey, I own a ECS K7VMM+ motherboard with a 1.2Ghz Athlon at the moment, I
want to upgrade this chip to as high a clock speed as possible as the
current chip isn't really able to handle what I ask of it anymore. Does
anyone know what the maximum supported CPU this board is? I checked the
specs on the ECS website, all it said was:
Processor
a.. AMD® Athlon XP / Athlon / Duron CPU
b.. Socket A
c.. 266 / 200MHz
(http://www.ecsusa.com/products/k7vmm_plus.html)
which isn't that specific, I'm guessing it doesn't mean it can handle ANY
XPCPU?

I also checked their CPU guide table
(http://www.ecsusa.com/support/table_amd.html) which also didn't really help
me as it was a little over my head lol. Maybe it means it can only support a
XP2600+ CPU? If yes then I guess I'm stuck with that, if not I would like to
go for the XP3000/3200 chip.

Ach i duno, also, can anyone recommend a good heatsink and fan for the
CPU/MB? any help greatly appreciated!!

Thanks
Alistair

There are two main compatibility figures you need to look at when getting a
CPU for your motherboard: The raw clock speed and the FSB speed (Front Side
Bus speed). You won't be able to use a CPU in your motherboard that needs
to run above 266Mhz (FSB). I have an ECS K7S5A Pro motherboard, which
happily runs the older 266Mhz version of the AMD Athlon XP 2600+. The newer
version of the XP 2600+ runs at 333Mhz, so won't be compatible with your
motherboard.

You may have a hard time getting hold of a 266Mhz version, as they are
somewhat scarce now, but I managed to get a new one from a dealer on eBay UK
a few months back. You can quite easily get a 266Mhz XP 2400+ from anywhere
at the moment for little more than £60 though, and if you do manage to find
a 266Mhz XP 2600+, you shouldn't pay above £70 for it. Unfortunately you
won't be able to use a 3000+ or 3200+ CPU with your motherboard.

Just remember to set the *CPU Speed* in your BIOS at *133/133* for the chip
to run at 266Mhz.
