I thought it might be a fun project to build a computer from scratch
using spare parts from ebay. Here's the list of stuff I think I need
to buy:

motherboard
power supply
hard disk
ram chip
cd rom drive

2power cords
monitor

Please let me know if I'm missing anything.

You might want a case, monitor cable, drive cables.

You're missing tons of stuff if you're really starting from
scratch with "nothing". You're going to have to make more
effort to list things before we can begin to add to your
list though- since everyone knows a keyboard is needed but
you didn't list that, for example.

A PC is modular, what you need depends on what you plan to
do with it, and what functions are built into the
motherboard. I think a good start might be a CPU, floppy
drive, some cables, a case, fans, keyboard, mouse, and a
case of beer.
