Easy way to count emails

Is there an easy way to count emails in one's email box, say all the outgoing
or received emails in a given month? I need this function to quickly report
how many email requests and answers I receive and respond to monthly. It
would seem logical that you could highlight all the emails for a month and
the program would tell you how many emails were highlighted. This doesn't
seem to work, however. Any ideas?

You can define your own view for this which has a filter applied.
View-> Arrange By-> Current View-> Define Views...

Search Folders might also do the trick.
