Easy Transfer migration blocked by Spybot Search & Destroy

After 4 attempts to do an "Easy Transfer" migration from old XP system to new
Vista system using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable, I noticed the migration
always failed when Spybot Search & Destroy was named below the progress bar
on the Vista system. So I uninstalled the Spybot program and the migration
went flawlessly! Note: I had already done the 'prescreen' get-ready for
migration process online through Microsoft, but the Spybot Search & Destroy
program had not shown up as an issue. UNINSTALL SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY
before trying to do an Easy Transfer migration of files using a Belkin cable.

I might offer that such crap should never be installed to begin with.

I don't know your age, or expertise (of which you have a very high opinion),
however, you misjudge Spybot Search and Destroy. Check it at CENet or PCMag.
It was out there clearing spyware before Norton and McAfee. Now, of course,
the giants in virus protection have the same offerings as part of their
products, still Spybot Search & Destroy often picks up what they miss. It
surely did block migration from XP to Vista until I realized what the problem
was! Considering the number of downloads of Spybot Search & Destroy that
have been made, it is a significant problem for Easy Transfer migrations and
an alert needs to be added to the pre-scan program to identify it before the
migration begins so that people are stuck for 4 or 5 hours like I was trying
to get the operation to work.

What the hell difference does that make? Look it up if it's important
to you, it's in my address.
or expertise (of which you have a very high opinion),

I think you're projecting. Get, AdAware SE Personal (Not the newest version)

Although, there isn't much that can help VISTA at this point, but a couple of
very serious service packs.
however, you misjudge Spybot Search and Destroy.

It began as piece of shit con job, and barely continues to hold it's own.
Misleading advertising and search placements acheived it's high down
load numbers. They still do it today.... "Free" removal tool".... So the
gullible people believe they can fix a problem, download and run, find
all sorts of spyware and malware, click 'remove' only to be told, "Sorry,
if you want that out, it'll be $29.95."
Check it at CENet or PCMag.

I check this stuff in computers, not in the advertising rags.
It was out there clearing spyware before Norton and McAfee.

Now there are the two world's worst pieces of invasive crappola.
They can screw up *any* OS from 3.1 to Vista.

Cheers,

By the way... did you clean up the registry?

Well, I do have a clue clown.

You have such a small clue, you don't even know when you're being spoken to.
People like you should be barred from here.

The people who should be barred are those that believe software can do
everything for them, and thus they never bother to learn how to maintain
their own PCs.

"Easy Transfer" is as much a waste of money as is "Spybot".
(Just my humble opinion.... while yours seems to be off topic
hostility).

By the way... have *you* ever removed Spybot from the registry?

Nevermind.... I'll bet you think your PC gets a registry cleaning on boot up, too.

Cheers,

Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooooooooo.... I'M IMPRESSED !!!!!!

Now go kiss some more ass and maybe you'll get your MSMVP.

I think I know a bit more than you!

Think all you like... it hasn't done you any good here yet.
I am 59yo.

Mmmmmmmm.... I AM SOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo IMPRESSED !!!!!!

Not that it makes a damned bit of difference to a wise ass that
can't even tell when he is being addressed, but I am 4 years
younger that you and do the same work, but I don't do recovery.

If you would use software either piece of the aforementioned
software, I would be certain NOT to hire you.

You are just a Johnny-come-lately to comps

You're an unknowing ass that should mind his own, overblown ego, business...

You entered this thread trying to kick my ass for some reason... but all
you have done is whimper that I have an opinion that is based on fact
and experience, and feed your ego in the process of doing so.

Please... either go help someone who is completely clueless or go
play in the street... preferably the latter.

Why don't you two children take it offline? exchange im's and continue this
outside of the forum. i don't care to read this stuff; I just want
eztransfer to stop hanging on my XP box. can either of you pause your
mudslinging for a moment and assist?

BTW, I have strong opinions about Spybot S&D, but I'm not going to state
them for fear of getting hit by a mudball.

You went back 34 days just to add this insult to the nutcase who called
me an inexperienced, johnny-come-lately, cockhead because I believe
that Spybot is a manipulative, con-job, POS ?!?

Do what the OP did.... remove Spybot S&D. Then complain to MS and
Spybot about the 'issue', providing all of the details you can. Personally,
I'd ditch Spybot, clean the registry, and install AdAware SE Personal.
(Not AdAware version 7.).

I have strong opinions about people who cram invasive software into their
PCs in the hopes that it will make up for bad surfing and maintenance habits,
and I'm not afraid to project that.

Just searching for some answers, Mr. Morgan. I didn't go looking 34 days
back just to insult people. Back on topic, now that my transfer completed
(solved the XP box hang myself) do you have any idea how to cure the
situation where all my folders on the Vista machine that transferred are "not
accessible...access is denied"? I transferred the objects in the Geoff
Stuart account to the new computer, which also has a Geoff Stuart account.
Both are Administrators.

Thanks if you can help.

Quite honestly, Geoff... I despise VISTA and I have never used the
automated tools for migrating anything. I burned my files onto data
CDs and manually transferred them into the VISTA box (clean install,
not an upgrade) in the office. No issues. VISTA is on one PC at the
office and on one employee's laptop, and all of the PCs at my church
(which I support). I had a clean install of VISTA Home Basic installed
on a single PC for thirty days at home, unactivated, before I gave the
OS away with a new computer build -- this after deciding that VISTA's
background process complexity (along with a number of other OS
intricacies that could not be shut down) along with it's ability to both
assemble and report to MS, a highly accurate profile of the user and
the complete state of the OS and the PC, wasn't my cup of tea just yet.

A quick try would be turning off UAC, reboot and try accessing the files
again.

http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

Overview of UAC:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/Windo...8514-4c9e-ac08-4c21f5c6c2d91033.mspx?mfr=true

If you're a single-user PC owner, UAC is a heaping pile of horse feces,
basically only for security issues in multi-user/single PC or heavily
networked environments. It's of little to no value for a single user.

I can't even simulate the issue for you because there is zero OEM
software on any of the boxes I mentioned (except the church), as
they are clean installs from VISTA DVDs. I will however, keep an eye
on the threads you've started and if nothing comes up for you, try
migrating a few things... (but I don't allow SpyBot on any of my
systems, and we may not be configured similarly).

Cheers... & sorry no joy today...

David,

Well, you're gonna love this. I installed a little reg hack called Take
Ownership (see http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=499870) which
is supposed to allow me to recover full access to the selected file /
directory, sub directories and their content after Easy Transfer takes it
away. While I am not able to see the "Take Ownership" contect menu entry in
the Elevated Command Prompt (what's that?), it did seem to eliminate the
shortcuts to My Music, My Documents, etc. that previously I couldn't open.
Most of my data is now accessible.

I feel I've lost control of the upgrade in that I don't know where Easy
Transfer was supposed to put things vs. what it actually did, so I'm just
checking app-by-app and manually copying things when necessary. The security
model in Vista differs from XP in ways I don't fully understand (and were not
even hinted at on the Welcome screens). It will be a gradual learning
process. I figured there was little to lose because I have not yet shifted
over to the Vista box (Kaspersky is on order, I'm not risking exposing an
unprotected machine to the Internet). I already reloaded it from the factory
CD, so I can do that again if needed. Meanwhile the XP box chugs along for
paying bills and doing my email.

I did have more success with Easy Transfer Companion, a beta version that MS
has made available. It transfers programs from one machine to another, which
avoids doing installs, endless Internet updates, and option configurations.
Unlike Easy Transfer, it worked like a charm, and even had explanations of
what it was doing. Plus, it logs its activity and tells me what it could NOT
accomplish. So far everything I've tried to run is working perfectly.

So I'll keep you posted. I may not have to turn off UAC but will definitely
read the article you suggested before I make up my mind. Yesterday I took a
day off the computer hassles to finish grouting my kitchen backsplash to
avoid a domestic disturbance.

Thanks,

Geoff

After viewing this I tried to uninstall Spybot. This is the message I got:
"The uninstall file c:programs/spybot-search&Destroy/unins000.dat" is in a
format not recognized by this version of the uninstaller. Cannot uninstall.
