earphone trouble

Hi,
I have a dell desktop, and everything works fine. Then when I put earphones
in the jack for headphones (it's got the icon on top) This weird but annoying
sound keeps repeating every couple of seconds. It's like a fast dedede
noise...I thought it was the earphones, so I put another pair, but still the
same thing. I muted everything, but it's still making that noise. I've tried
changing in sound options the speaker ssetting to stereo headphones, but no
difference. There must be some conflict, but I have no idea what! I looked at
the back of the comp, and it has line in and microphone....and so does the
front actually...so I doubt I've got it in the wrong jack...Any ideas?
Thankyou!

Try R.clicking the speaker by the clock, select:Volume control Then
select:Options
Properties,chk youre settings...If it still doesnt work,go to run,type:DXDIAG
Run the Direct X tests for headphones.Or/and open device mgr,R.click the
sound
hardware, select :uninstall Do this for all sound devices listed,do one @ a
time
w/o restarting, then close out restart pc.XP will reinstall the device on
restart.

Hi Andrew,
I've changed the settings for the volume over and over, but that doesn't
seem to be it. I did the directX tests and it claims there are no problems.
not too keen about reinstalling the sound devices though...at least not yet.
The device manager doesn't say there's any conflict or prob with the hardware
though.
There must be another way....But thanks for your help!

Well, something weird has happened and now they don't make any noise.????
So now I'm happy:)
Have a good day :D
