Earlier System Restore Points

M

mholmes

Hi all,
I received a virus on my laptop sometime in June of this year. When
I attempt to perform a system restore, it will only give me points
that are after August until today. Is there any way to get earlier
system restore points or are they lost forever? Thanks in advance for
your help.

No, you can't. Restore points are kept for a maximum of six months,
and are also limited to the space allocated for them.

Going back as far as June would not be wise anyway. Chances are that
restoration back that far would create out-of-synch conditions on your
drive.

Besides, System Restore is not the way to get rid of a virus. Use
anti-virus software.

I think you meant three months.

Yes - open System Restore and click "Create a Restore Point". Give it a
name if you wish (it will automatically be dated), and that's it.

Can restore points be kept longer than three months? If so, how?

Thank you,

No. Moreover there is no reason to keep them even that long.
Restoration back that far would very likely create out-of-synch
conditions on your drive.

The purpose of System Restore is to provide a quick and easy
mechanism for reverting the system to the state it in was a few days,
or at most a week or two, ago. It is not meant to be a backup
solution, nor a cure-all for all problems.

Why do you say no? I have four months worth.
