e reference embedding error when starting Word 2003

When I start Word, I get an "e reference embedding" error. It states unknown
application version. It then asks me to enable or disable macros and then
pops up again. How can I get rid of this?

It sounds like you have a broken or badly written add-in. See section 4 of
