E-mails being automatically deleted

All of a sudden when I either open and close a new e-mail or after
highlighting it, it is automatically deleted and cannot be found in the
deleted items folder.

I have tried using Help to find the answer but with no luck.
 
First thing I'd do is use Find or Advanced Find to see if the mail messages
are still around but you just can't visually find them. Could be the folder
is sorted oddly or the message is in another folder, etc
