I got a spam e-mail to-day to one of my web addresses from the 'very
same e-mail address as mine'. It was, say, from (e-mail address removed) to
(e-mail address removed). How is that possible?

TIA

Someone spoofed you as the sender - this is trivial to do, and it happens
all the time. The specifications for SMTP email were originally designed for
a kinder, gentler world without spammers. You can take a look at the message
headers if you want more info, but it's generally futile trying to track
down the scumbags one message at a time, to be honest.

Thanks much! I am reassured. There was no message just a spam heading
about some designer footwear and bags.

Can I pick your brains about another e-mail issue? For that same e-
mail address, for the last couple of months, I am having to enter my
password twice to get in. First time it says that e-mail address or
the password is incorrect. I enter it a second time and all is well. I
used to think that may be I mistype the password first time but that
is clearly not the case. It happens to only this particular e-mail
address with MSN, and not to my HOTMAIL addresses.

Any thoughts as to what maybe happening?

TIA

Hi - sorry, no. You'll want to check with MSN support. This is a Windows XP
newsgroup - email in general is a little out of bounds as a topic, and
specific applications or ISPs are definitely wide out of bounds. Good luck!

Thanks, will check with msn.

This is a result of posting to "public" accessible newsgroups without "hiding"
your email address you posted with. Several spammers / spammer systems gather
all possible email addresses they can find off the Usenet groups and then use
these in order to "by-pass" spam filtering system. never post with a true
email address.

Not necessarily. It could also be that one of the OP's friends is using a
compromised computer that has been harvested for SMTP addresses. Or it
could've been harvested elsewhere. There is no way to know. However, yes,
it's wise to munge in usenet.
