E-mail password

New Vista user and I am the administrator and only user. Microsoft Outlook
will not store my password. Have used various approaches to the e-mail
account page and always check the Store Password box but it never stores, so
I have to provide the password every time I check my mail. Anyone have a
suggestion? Frustrating.

I assume you are using an older version of Outlook (not 2007). It is a
known, but as of yet, unsolved bug. No solution as of yet.

What e-mail service are you trying to connect to? Hotmail? Yahoo? Maybe I
can go through some of the settings with you.

I haven't forgotten about you. When I get home tonight I'll go through the
POP/SMTP configs on my home box and create a walkthrough for you for testing
the connection.

Question, was it working until recently? Or has it never worked on your
Office 2k7 setup before?

William: This is an '03 version of Office and it ran perfectly on XP. Now I
am running it on a new PC running Vista and this problem has existed since it
was first installed. And other than having to enter my password every time,
the program runs flawlessly. So the problem is merely an inconvenience, but
will appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Ben

Hey there Ben,

I set up POP3 mail accounts from both MSN and GMAIL on my laptop and haven't
run into any issues. There's a couple of things I'd like for you to check
out.

1. Open Outlook.
2. Click the Tools menu, and select Account Settings...
3. Highlight your account and click on Change…
4. Click on the Test Account settings button and note any errors that occur.
5. Click on the More Settings button.
6. Click on the Advanced tab.
7. Check the incoming and outgoing server port numbers. By default they’ll
be 995 for POP and 587 for SMTP. Also note for the encrypted connection
settings if it is set to TLS, SSL, None, or Auto.
8. Cancel out of all the settings dialogues.
9. Go to Control Panel>Security Center.
10. On the left side of the Window, click on Windows firewall.
11. On the left side of the Window, click on Allow a program through Windows
Firewall.
12. Make sure the Microsoft Outlook box is checked.

If you encountered an error during the test, post it here for me to take a
look at. If not, you’ll need to contact your mail provider to make sure that
those settings for POP/SMTP are correct. They should have the info handy.
Sometimes they'll use port settings other than the defaults.

Thanks William, but didn't work. FIrst of all the change to the POP and SMPT
port settings simply froze the program. Had to go back to the
Charter-recommended 100/25 settings. And when I went to the Security
settings on Control Panel, could not find Microsoft Outlook there anyplace,
including using the Browse button, etc.
-- So no progress at all. Appreciate your efforts, but no-go. Ben

Hi Ben,

Not sure if this may help you or not. I understand that you are using
Outlook 2003 and from what I've read it's suppose to work with Vista,
however some older versions will work, but not without problems. I don't
know much about Outlook as I've never used it, but in interest trying to
help you I've found the following.

AutoIt v3 is a freeware BASIC-like scripting language designed for
automating the Windows GUI and general scripting.

Another fix written by Coyote_HU seems to have worked for some. Look almost
at the bottom of this page. On the left you will see Coyote_HU and to the
right the scripts he wrote to open Outlook and make it work as it should.

My thanks to SG, William Anderson and Dustin for all the assistance. Please
note that sometimes, even dim-bulbs such as me can find a diamond. Stumbled
on the fact that VISTA now has its own e-mail program, Windows Mail, so I set
it up, it works like a charm without the password nonsense, and I was able to
export my Outlook address file and import it into the new mail program. I
will now simply retain Outlook to use its address file for my loder Word
program and otherwise forget it.
