E-mail moved from PST to Mailbox are now lost

User moved files found in her PST to her live Mailbox (exchange). When she
tried to move this folder of e-mail back to her PST, she recieved the
following error:

Can't move folder. A top-level folder can't be moved to one of its
subfolders. Or, toy may not have appropriate permissions for the folder. To
check your permissions for the folder, right-click the folder, and then click
Properties on the shortcut menu. Outlook has not finished synchronizing
local changes made to items in this folder. You cannot delete this folder
until the synchronization with the server is complete. [OK]

Nothing in deleted items, nothing to recover - is there any hope??

Problem is now - we have missing e-mail. The foilder moved back to her PST,
but about 100mb of e-mail messages are missing!

Does she have a backup copy of the PST file?
Why is she using PST files for storage anyway?

Ha! Ha!

No back up of PST. Typical user using e-mail as document management tool.
Bad tool. That's a different issue we are addressing.

We are wondering if there are corrput files or something that a computer
forensic service could get and restore.

Possibly...but I don't know for sure. Is it possible that these items are
somehow in the root of the mailbox? How big is the mailbox - if you look at
the folder size, does it show you anything interesting in any particular
folders?

Aloha Jan,

Any chance you have a backup of her mailbox for the period of time while
the messages were still in there?

There are PST backups from previous years - none containing the information
she is missing.

I am wondering if these messages were lost in limbo, when the server was
trying to sync with the mailbox - where did they go? Can a forensic
specialist find them?
